Mission
Layālaya Arts Initiative creates opportunities to engage with new ideas, traditions, and perspectives through artistic and cultural encounters, expanding perception, deepening connection, and fostering understanding.
Vision
A World Unboxed: Where cultural difference is a source of discovery and connection, revealing our individuality and shared humanity.
Who We Are
Layālaya Arts Initiative is a creative laboratory and cultural platform where global artistic traditions, diverse philosophies, and distinct perspectives come together in dialogue through artistic process, cultural exchange, and experimentation. In a world that often reduces human complexity to simple categories, Layālaya stands for a world unboxed, embracing the richness that emerges when people engage deeply across differences. We believe the vitality of human life arises from the interplay of distinct voices, traditions, and perspectives. Finding the common rhythm in our diverse human story lies at the heart of Layālaya.
The Work
Layālaya’s work is organized around four interconnected pillars that cultivate artistic creation, deepen cultural understanding, strengthen community connection, and support the next generation of artists.
Creating New Possibilities
1. The Living Laboratory
Profound artistic experiences emerge at the edge of the unknown.
Layālaya creates conditions for experimentation, collaboration, and discovery, bringing together master artists, emerging voices, and thought leaders from different artistic, intellectual, and cultural traditions to create original work where difference becomes the source of innovation.
Programs: Artist Residencies, New Work Development, Interdisciplinary Artistic Productions
2. Young Artist Initiative
We don’t just teach the next generation; we invite them to the table.
By involving students in the entire lifecycle of creation, from the first spark to the final note, we connect young people directly to artistic lineage, mentorship, and creative opportunity. We seek to open doors for students of all backgrounds, ensuring that talent and curiosity, not circumstance, determine who has a seat at the table.
Programs: Mentorship with Master Artists, Residency-Based Learning, Student Participation in New Work Development
Connecting Art and Community
3. Arts & Ideas
Art as a lens to engage the ideas shaping our world.
We use art as a masterclass in global citizenship through which people navigate diverse perspectives, explore complex questions, and imagine new possibilities. By bringing artists, thinkers, educators, and leaders from diverse fields into conversation, we cultivate curiosity, expand the ways we make meaning, unbox human potential.
Programs: IL-Logical Minds (IL-Intelligent Learning Framework), Cultural Intelligence Initiative
4. The Art of Belonging
True community is built through the courage to listen.
We create opportunities for people to gather through shared artistic experience. By opening the artistic process to the public, we transform audiences from observers into participants and communities into collaborators, creating spaces where connection, dialogue, and belonging can flourish.
Programs: Community Conversations and Public Dialogue, Open Rehearsals & Public Experiences
The Ecosystem in Action
Layālaya Global Arts Festival @ Woodstock: The World Unboxed
Guided by the artistic vision of Sandeep Das, Grammy Award–winning tabla artist and Guggenheim Fellow, the festival is the public expression of our mission and the place where Layālaya’s four pillars come to life.
The Living Laboratory creates the conditions for artistic experimentation, collaboration, and artistic innovation. The Young Artist Initiative connects emerging artists directly to the creative process through mentorship and participation. Arts & Ideas uses art as a lens to explore the ideas, questions, and forces shaping our world. The Art of Belonging creates opportunities for people to gather across differences through shared artistic experience.
Through an embedded residency model, artists work alongside students through mentorship, workshops, collaborative creation, and shared artistic process. The festival then opens this work to the broader community through conversations, rehearsals, performances, and cultural exchange, providing audiences with direct access to both the creative journey and the resulting artistic work.
